About this career
An ultrasound tech, also called a diagnostic medical sonographer, is a healthcare professional who uses special imaging equipment to create pictures of the inside of the body. They use a handheld device called a transducer that sends sound waves into the body and creates images on a screen. Doctors use these images to check on things like a developing baby during pregnancy or to examine organs such as the heart, liver, or kidneys. Ultrasound techs work closely with patients, explaining procedures and helping them feel comfortable. They also work with doctors to make sure clear, accurate images are taken for diagnosis. Most ultrasound techs complete a two-year or four-year college program in medical imaging and may earn certification. This career is a great choice for students who are interested in healthcare, technology, and helping others.
