Project Lead The Way

Project Lead The Way (PLTW) provides transformative learning experiences for students and teachers across the U.S., and there are over 400 PLTW programs in WA State alone. PreK-12 STEM pathways in biomedical science, computer science, and engineering engage students through awareness, exploration, preparation and launching students to be ready to meet their college and/or career goals.

PLTW students can earn WA State Industry-recognized Credentials (IRCs) in any of the 3 high school programs that launch students straight to work after graduation. Student benefits and opportunities with colleges are also available. Find out more information about student opportunities on the PLTW website.

How do I get involved?

Students should talk with their school counselors and teachers about PLTW opportunities in their school or district. Educators and students can attend “PLTW Showcases” at other WA schools to learn more - some are planned or can be scheduled by request. PLTW students are actively involved in Career and Technical Student Organizations (CTSO) such as TSA, Skills USA, HOSA, and Cyber Patriots and many participate in national competitions.

Teachers can learn more at workshops and presentations during the year via WA STEM Networks, Career Connect WA Networks, and Professional organizations. Also, attend the annual PLTW Summit!

Frequently Asked Questions

Why should a student take a Project Lead The Way course?

PLTW courses are written by educators, industry professionals, and university instructors who, together, make sure each course addresses the most relevant and up-to-date skills and content a student needs to know. They are interdisciplinary and project-based, focusing on students using the design-process to be successful problem-solvers.

Is PLTW expensive?

Investing in PLTW is a great value for your students' future and, the more students who are involved in a school's PLTW program, the less it costs/student! Most middle and high school programs qualify for Perkins/CTE funding. Grants are available through PLTW, OSPI, and/or industry partners to start new PLTW programs or enhance/expand existing programs.

Can a student build their own career pathway with PLTW?

Absolutely! There are 10 Gateway units in middle school and 18 courses in high school across 3 career pathways, for students to select according to their interests and career goals.

Can PLTW be blended with other programs/curriculum to create a career pathway?

Absolutely - yes!

Do teachers have to attend professional development to teach PLTW?

Yes, every teacher is trained and is ready to guide students at their grade level and in their career focus.
